Teater Bislett: The Unconventional Opening and Controversial Performance

– I’m going to swear in church. And play 23 roles. The theater director and I hope that men in uniform will arrest us. Welcome to Teater Bislett! shouts Terje Strømdahl.

Despite the premises: the theater is not religious. Before all performances, the altar is removed, explains Terje Strømdahl, here at a spontaneous rehearsal in Vestre Frikirke. Teater Bislett opens on Wednesday evening, 8 November. Photo: Jan T. Espedal

Vestre Frikirke, Bislett roundabout: Norway’s newest theater is preparing for the opening performance. Aftenposten was prepared to interview the theater manager. But then actor Strømdahl declaims:

– God has abandoned us! That is why the production has its own motto: Jesus back to the people. Three evenings, now in November, he comes here. Jesus, that is. Together with die say, as we say on the eastern edge. I play them both. And over 20 more roles. Teater Bislett opens with a very varied text, by Dario Fo.
