Teardown new HomePod puts improvement in the spotlight

Although the second-generation HomePod speaker already offers excellent updates, the device houses another important surprise. It’s the type you often hope for, but don’t always get. Thankfully, we’ve got the women and men iFixit to point that out to us, with a brand new teardown.

You can eat that teardown in its entirety YouTube to look at. With three minutes, the production does not take very long, while you still get an interesting look under the hood. Because it turns out: the new HomePod is a lot more durable than its predecessor, making repair a lot easier.

HomePod more durable than before

That turns out to be a bit of a theme at Apple. If it is not about the new iPhone, then it is about its smart speaker. It doesn’t matter whether Apple actually does this for the environment or to save costs. Because the result is the same: the company’s products are becoming more and more sustainable.

This is a big improvement from four years ago. Then the HomePod was attached with glue. This time Apple uses screws. So you just need a good screwdriver to get in. And taking the speaker apart afterwards also seems to be a piece of cake.

A very large heat sink

The video also shows that the Apple HomePod (2023) has a large heat sink. Why would Apple do that? Well, the company cares about a good audio experience and heat can distort audio. A large heat sink can keep everything sounding neat and clean.

iFixit reports that the speaker is very easy to disassemble. As a result, the platform also thinks that it is easy to repair. What can throw a spanner in the works is whether Apple uses special software to limit parts. We don’t know anything about that yet — that may come later.

Sonos will soon answer HomePod with two new speakers
