Tear gas and arrests during demonstrations against pension reform in France

Strikes and protests against pension reform in France have reached new levels of intensity after opponents of the government blocked railway stations, roads and part of the Charles de Gaulle international airport in Paris, DPA reported.

The police in the capital used tear gas against the demonstrators and made arrests. In other cities, including Bordeaux, Nantes and Rennes, there were also mass protests accompanied by tension.

More than 80 demonstrators were arrested, and 123 gendarmerie and police officers were injured, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanen announced, as quoted by France Press.

According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, 1.9 million people came out to protest in the country. According to the General Confederation of Labor, the number of participants in the protests was 3.5 million. About 12,000 police officers were sent to maintain order during the demonstrations, DPA said.

The strikes and protests have been mostly peaceful for weeks, but in recent days there has been an increase in violence in spontaneous demonstrations.
