Teams Gather Info for Buy Local Strategy in Nova Scotia

HALIFAX — Nova Scotia’s Progressive Conservative government says it will gather information from shoppers this summer as it tries to deliver on its campaign promise to increase demand for local produce.

The government says it will send a team to stores and markets across the province to study consumer behavior and collect data from shoppers.

Additionally, he says he will be asking people about their thoughts on promoting the buy local strategy – called the Nova Scotia Loyal program.

Promised last summer during the election campaign, the program aims to create a 10% increase in demand for local products.

The government says it wants 20% of all food Nova Scotians buy by 2030 to be grown or produced in the province.

Premier Tim Houston said the buy local initiative was to be supported by a consumer rewards program, although no details were released.

During the election campaign, Mr. Houston floated the hypothesis that a points program could reward shoppers for purchases of local food and non-food items.
