Teams offers two options for broadcasting Teams meeting content: NewTek NDI® (Network Device Interface) and SDI (Serial Digital Interface)
Newtek’s NDI® technology allows you to broadcast audio and video streams from a Teams meeting to your local network. By using NewTek’s NDI® technology in a Teams meeting, you’ll have unique video streams on the network that can be used in your own production.
SDI has been used in broadcast productions since 1989 and is compatible with most legacy studio hardware devices. Hardware devices from AJA Video Systems and Blackmagic Design provide connectivity to legacy broadcast devices using SDI.
Turn on NDI® technology in Teams
First of all, a administrator must activate the salidaIS® for each individual person. Once NDI-out® has been activated, a new option will be available in Teams.
Use: NDI-in® is currently not available in Teams.
then select Settings and more next to your profile picture at the top of Teams and choose Setting. then select app permissions and turn on the toggle button next to production capacities.
After enabling NDI® technology in Teams, you can go to the meeting controls and select more actions and choose Broadcast via NDI.
Use: All meeting attendees who have subscribed to that NDI broadcast will receive a notification that broadcast functionalities are activated.
Output NDI® Features
Once NDI® technology is activated, the following streams will be available:
-
main speaker: A broadcast will be generated that automatically switches to anyone who is actively speaking for all incoming broadcasts. (Audio or video from your own equipment will not be included.)
-
Local: An audio/video stream will be generated and sent to the meeting from the computer. (This allows you to have the same audio/video in the meeting and in the local NDI® production.)
-
Individual users: Each individual user will have a stream available through NDI®. Incoming audio from a meeting is mixed and will be the same for all individual user streams. These streams will display the video in the same quality that the client receives.
Use: If no video is available, you’ll see a simple Teams logo screen. However, the NDI® software or hardware continues to receive the transmission.
-
Screen Sharing: Any incoming shared screen will be available as an NDI® stream.
-
Large gallery and conference mode: Both modes will have their own NDI® stream available.
SDI hardware output devices
As with NDI® output capabilities, SDI hardware output capabilities must have the NDI/Broadcast policy enabled by the administrator. You must also use blackmagic Design (BMD) hardware or AJA Video Systems hardware.
Once your administrator has enabled broadcasting for you, you will need to go to Settings and more next to your profile picture in Teams. then select Setting > permissions Application>, then enable the toggle button next to production capacities. If you have any SDI devices connected, you will see them in video hardware.
Grades:
-
SDI hardware devices may require additional configuration outside of Teams. Consult the manufacturer’s documentation for more information.
-
AJA Video Systems currently only supports video. Audio support coming soon.
If the hardware output option is available, when you are in a meeting you will have the option send video to hardware in More options next to the name of a meeting participant.
If more than one device type is available, they will be listed alphabetically. If a device can send more than one A/V stream, you’ll see a list of output options to choose from.
To stop streaming a particular video, go back to More options next to the person’s name and select Stop send to.
Use: If the hardware device is being used by something other than Teams, the option will still be displayed, but it will be disabled.
technical limitations
Here are some common technical issues to consider when using NDI® technology in Teams:
-
The broadcast of NDI® signals from Teams is limited by the number of streams and the quality of streams that the Teams client receives.
-
A good strategy is to first “pin” a video stream in Teams to ensure that a particular video stays connected throughout the meeting. For the meeting participant’s name, select more actions and then choose Anchor.
-
Try to limit the number of NDI® video streams to two or three on a single computer. This is another good strategy that will help ensure stability and performance for most users.
-
Switch to a different meeting layout, such as conference mode o to big gallery , you will prevent the video footage of other people in the meeting from reaching your computer. The team will then only be able to transmit the selected design via NDI®. (If you go back to the design Gallery the video footage will be restored).

Apple Macs with M1 processors are not currently supported for output hardware.
