The United States won the inaugural United Cup, a mixed team event jointly organized by the ATP and the WTA. Team USA beat Italy in Sunday’s final in Sydney.
The Americans forced the decision in three games, without conceding a single set. It was Taylor Fritz (ATP 9) who took the title point by beating Matteo Berrettini (ATP 16) 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (8/6) in the third single. The semi-finalist of the last ATP Masters won four of the five matches he played in this event.
Jessica Pegula, who beat Poland’s Iga Swiatek (WTA 1) in the semifinals on Friday, put the United States on the right path by winning 6-4 6-2 against Martina Trevisan (WTA 27). Frances Tiafoe (ATP 19) took advantage in the second single of Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 23) leaving after the first set (6-2).
