Team leaders set up their own studio “Gravity Well”

The executive producer of Apex Legends, Drew McCoy, founded the studio “Gravity Well” together with his lead programmer Jon “Slothy” Shiring. Both changed ten years ago from the call-of-duty studio Infinity Ward to the then new respawn, which apparently no longer corresponds to their ideas of corporate culture and creative focus.

Gravity Well, with its location in Los Angeles, wanted to focus on blockbuster games, but the team size should remain below 100 and most of the employees work from home. Applications will be accepted immediately. On the official website, McCoy explains that this is an opportunity to change the way Triple-A games are produced: “We’re starting a studio because it’s about how we want to make games.” You want to take the time to iterate everything and get feedback from the entire team.

An important priority is “team health”. To achieve this, try to keep things relatively small, according to Shiring: “As soon as your team size exceeds 100 people, everything changes (…) You then need meetings just to make decisions. Alternatives are sealed off and brilliant creatives become less creative. ”

Therefore, the team size should be limited to 85. In addition, they want to take greater risks without having to worry about supporting a large organization. One wants to continue to produce games that the developers would or will play personally after work – so postulates one of the first sentences on the official website.
