Indian opener KL Rahul was removed as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team following his poor performance in the format. However, Team India is yet to announce their new vice-captain. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are among the top contenders for the position.
According to reports, India may announce a new vice-captain before the third Test against Australia on March 1. However, former Indian wicketkeeper Saba Karim has pointed out the reason behind India not announcing their new vice-captain yet.
Karim says India is hesitant to announce a new vice-captain as they await the return of Rishabh Pant. The wicketkeeper-batsman will not be seen on the cricket field for the rest of the year following a car accident in December last year.
There’s a reason why India didn’t pick a vice-captain. Everyone is waiting for Rishabh Pant to come back. He is an ideal candidate for the position of vice-captain. He was emerging with great excellence – said Saba Karim.
Karim feels that Jadeja and Pant are the only real candidates for the position. Although Pant is now out of the international set-up, Jadeja marked his international comeback with flying colors during the Test series against Australia and won the Player of the Match award in the last two Tests.
