Teahouse in Berlin’s Tiergarten burnt down – Altonaer Straße closed

Completely engulfed in flames – that was the conclusion of the fire brigade when they arrived at the teahouse in the English Garden on Sunday night. Now it is clear: the building has burned down almost completely. The fire brigade is still on duty.

The Teehaus restaurant in the English Garden in Berlin burned down early Sunday.

According to the fire department, they were called at around two in the morning. The thatched roof of the one-story restaurant was on fire and had largely collapsed. Therefore, the emergency services could only extinguish the fire from the outside.

The fire service said it was difficult for the firefighters to extinguish the fire because access for emergency vehicles was very limited and there were no fire hydrants near the teahouse. However, the flames were prevented from spreading to the park.

The situation is now manageable, a spokesman for the Berlin fire department told rbb on Sunday morning. “We are now fighting embers, especially in the thatched roof. The technical service is trying to remove parts of the roof.”

According to a fire department spokesman, no one was injured. According to the fire department, 85 emergency personnel were on site during the night and 47 on Sunday morning. A drone with a thermal imaging camera was also deployed.

As was announced this morning, it is not possible to predict how long the operation will last, nor the impact on the nearby Altonaer Straße. Only one lane is open there, as fire engines and equipment for the operation have been parked there, the police and fire service told rbb. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are still unclear.

The English Garden, which was created in the 1950s, is located near Bellevue Palace, the official residence of the Federal President, and is part of the Tiergarten. The park is a popular tourist destination.
