Teacure, from digestive diseases to diabetes and obesity… Presenting a new concept of laser treatment

Tcure, a company selected for the Gyeongnam Creative Economy Innovation Center Startup Leap Package, announced that it will enter the global market within three years with a laser-based omnidirectional light irradiation catheter fusion endoscopic treatment system.
Laser-based medical diagnosis and treatment is a rapidly developing field and is considered a key technology for future medical innovation. In the diagnostic field, lasers are used for retinal examination, precision ophthalmology diagnosis, endoscopic microscopy, blood flow examination, and cancer diagnosis. In the treatment field, skin care procedures are representative, but the scope of use is expanding to include vision correction surgery, varicose vein surgery, and targeted cancer removal surgery.
Tcure’s omnidirectional light irradiation catheter fusion endoscopic treatment system is characterized by being able to irradiate uniformly at 360 degrees, beyond the limitations of existing optical fiber-based medical lasers that only irradiate in a straight line. The company explains that this can help improve the symptoms of reflux esophagitis patients suffering from stress and eating problems.

Reflux esophagitis is a disease that occurs when the function of the lower esophageal sphincter, a muscle located in the lower part of the esophagus, that is, the part connected to the stomach, decreases. Currently, most patients with reflux esophagitis rely on lifestyle improvements and drug treatment.
Tcure’s solution helps improve symptoms of reflux esophagitis by irradiating a laser to the weakened lower esophageal sphincter and activating collagen regeneration in the muscle. The concept of skin beauty laser treatment to create elastic skin is applied to the inside of the esophagus.
Some medical devices for surgical treatment, such as excising part of the sphincter area or sewing with a needle, are available mainly from overseas companies, but the difficulty of the procedure is known to be high. Since Tcure’s solution can be applied to an endoscope, it is expected to greatly lower the entry barrier to surgical treatment of reflux esophagitis as the doctor can perform the procedure while directly viewing the treatment area.
T-Cure further predicts intractable diseases of various organs, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure. In the case of diabetes, the duodenum, which absorbs nutrients from our body, has a significant impact on blood sugar control. In most diabetic patients, thickening of the mucous membrane in the duodenum is observed due to excessive absorption of nutrients.
In the case of reflux esophagitis, the laser was used to regenerate the skin, but this time, the laser is used to remove the mucous membrane in the duodenum, just like removing freckles in a skin care procedure. Tcure’s solution for diabetes treatment is currently undergoing clinical trials at Asan Hospital and Severance Hospital, and overseas are already showing interest in investing.
The target market was also set overseas rather than domestically. The strategy is that if a firm presence is revealed in the global medical device market, which is mainly led by American companies, the domestic market will naturally follow the trend. Due to the nature of the medical device market, long-term clinical trials are essential and the threshold for required certification is high, but it is expected that there will be a big impact in the market as soon as the first product, which is scheduled for release in 2027, is released.
Based on this growth outlook, Tcure was selected for the ‘Deep Tech Tips’ private investment-led technology startup support program of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. As a start-up company founded by National Pukyong National University teachers, it recently won the Gyeongnam Province Governor’s Award, the Grand Prize, at the ‘2024 Startup Leap Package GO-SPACE IR Competition’ held by the Gyeongnam Creative Economy Innovation Center.

Tcure CEO Kang Hyun-wook said, “As we have had the overseas market in mind since our founding in 2020, we will meet the support and expectations we have received so far and three years from now we will be proudly competing with global medical device companies,” adding, “We will be confidently competing with global medical device companies in three years. “We will become a company that provides innovative endoscopic treatment solutions that maximize patients’ treatment experience,” he said.
