In order to sustainably establish American football as a popular sport in Germany, the NFL is supporting the city of Munich with teacher training in flag football.

Munich – After 2022, the largest football league in the world is coming to Munich again for a guest appearance at the Allianz Arena on Sunday, November 10th, this time with the Carolina Panthers game against the New York Giants. As part of this major event, the sport should also be established in popular sports in Germany.

To this end, the NFL is supporting the city of Munich with teacher training in flag football. This year it took place for the first time on the new flag football field in the Riem sports campus, the training facility of Munich’s only flag football club, the Munich Spatzen.

According to a statement from the city of Munich, a total of 24 teachers took part in the two-day workshop. Flag football is a non-contact variant of American football. It can be played in mixed teams (boys and girls) and can therefore be implemented in school lessons for all age groups.

Instead of tackling the person carrying the ball to the ground, the defending team must pull at least one of the two flags from the flag belt each player is wearing. The other rules are similar to those of American football.

As part of the training, the participants were trained theoretically and practically in all the basics of flag football. In addition, each teacher received a flag football starter pack so that they could implement the new sport in physical education lessons.

The teachers also receive new units every week and a playbook with a collection of moves to make the lessons varied.
