Teachers, National Education Staff, and Students in Roanne Demonstrate Against Deteriorating Working and Learning Conditions

This Thursday, February 1 in the morning, teachers, National Education staff and students demonstrated in Roanne to denounce, among other things, the deterioration of working conditions and consequently the learning conditions of students.

In Roanne, the procession formed in front of the National Education Inspectorate, rue des Vies-Vieilles, before joining the sub-prefecture via the pedestrian streets with music.

The demonstrators – numbering 320 according to the prefecture and 500 according to the unions – responded to the call for a strike from the inter-union of teachers, who are demanding in particular an increase in salaries, or even better working conditions.

Level groups denounced

Teachers also denounced the establishment of level groups for 6th and 5th grade classes.

“This will only widen the gaps between students and destroy group cohesion. Even the less good ones who would have improved their results will never be able to follow in the group above, given that the latter will have progressed much more quickly” , cursed a mathematics teacher.

Against the government line

In the ranks, the call for the resignation of the Minister of Education, Amélie Oudéa-Castera, whose controversial remarks stimulated the anger of teachers who wish to defend public schools, and of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal was made to hear. The deployment of the uniform was also widely criticized, particularly by the students of the Jean-Puy high school.

In numbers

According to figures communicated by the Ministry of National Education, here are the participation rates in the social movement in the Lyon academy:

Overall average: 17.45%
Teacher average: 19.33%
Average 1st degree teachers: 19.83%
Average 2nd degree teachers: 18.57%

For secondary education, general participation in middle schools is estimated at 23.16%, in general and technological high schools at 10.32% and in vocational high schools at 8.03%.
