Teachers – Hanover – Seven out of ten teachers are women – education

Hanover (dpa / lni) – The proportion of women among teachers at Lower Saxony’s schools has increased noticeably in the past five years. In the past school year 2019/2020, seven out of ten teachers at general schools were women, the proportion of women was 73.3 percent, the State Statistical Office announced on Thursday in Hanover. A total of 76,477 teachers were employed at the schools at the time, 359 more than in the previous school year. In the 2014/2015 school year, on the other hand, the number of teachers was 74,792, the proportion of women was 71 percent – 2.3 percentage points less than in the previous school year.

Almost a third of all teachers, i.e. 30.3 percent or 23 166 teachers, were reportedly working in elementary schools. There the proportion of women is highest with 90.2 percent – it is “by far the highest proportion of women in comparison to the other types of schools”, judged the statistics office. At the other schools the proportion of women was lower, but always over 50 percent. It was lowest at 54.5 percent in the evening grammar schools.

In the coronavirus pandemic, teachers in primary schools in particular bear great responsibility – for the youngest, contact with teachers is “essential for learning success,” said the statistical office. In the past school year, almost half of the teachers (47.3 percent) worked there full-time, 41.4 percent were employed part-time. 1407 teachers were employed on an hourly basis (6.1 percent), a further 1209 teachers were in training (5.2 percent).

The proportion of women among hourly teachers at elementary schools was 96.3 percent. In contrast, the proportion of women among full-time primary school teachers reached 83.8 percent.
