‘Teacher’s Day’: an ode to the teacher and teacher

Tomorrow is ‘Teacher’s Day’. According to the dictionary, a teacher is someone who conveys knowledge or skills to others. While this is true, in practice it is so much more than that. You guide children on their unique learning path, which is one of the most beautiful and impactful tasks there is. Everyone can remember a teacher who left an indelible impression. It goes further than just transferring something, you can actually make a difference in a child’s life. On this special day we therefore pay tribute to the swimming teacher, who works with passion and dedication every day to make a difference.

The power of interaction

Pedagogy, the science of a child’s development into adulthood, essentially revolves around the practice of parenting. The word ‘pedagogy’ comes from the Greek word shirt googywhich literally means ‘children’s lead’. Fortunately, we have now learned that this term does not have to be taken so literally. It is not about leading in the strict sense, but about an interaction between teacher and student. This interaction is crucial. The most important thing a teacher can do is connect with the child. The most beautiful things arise from that connection. I once heard a primary school teacher say: ‘without a relationship there is no achievement’, and that is exactly what it is. If a teacher is truly able to see and recognize a child, then children are capable of wonderful achievements.

Swimming lessons: a safe haven for growth

Swimming lessons are also about much more than learning to float and swim technique. It’s about building trust, understanding and acceptance. As a swimming teacher, you want a child to learn to trust his or her own abilities. Fun plays an essential role in this, as does creating a safe environment in which children can grow and flourish. The confidence a child develops in the water, under the guidance of a patient and empathetic teacher, often extends to other aspects of their lives. The role of the swimming teacher therefore extends beyond the swimming pool. Not only will you teach a child how to swim, but you will also help them persevere when something is difficult and see the joy in the process. When you, as a teacher, really take the time to connect, you inspire children to rise above themselves. That makes the work so special: it is not just about skills, but about strengthening self-confidence and developing resilience. Learning to take on challenges and deal with uncertainties. And this in a way that respects their autonomy and strengthens their self-esteem.

Whether you are in front of the classroom, in the gym or in the swimming pool: your role is irreplaceable. You make a difference in a child’s life, every day. Your work, your passion and your dedication contribute to the future of children and therefore also to the future of society. So tomorrow – and every day afterward – let us pay tribute to the teacher and everyone who is committed to the development of our youth.
