These teachers are demanding an increase in their bonus to the same level as that of their research colleagues since 2021. They will submit their resignation to the director of the IUT of Montpellier-Sète this Thursday, June 15 at 2:30 p.m.
This Thursday, June 15 afternoon, part of the teachers of the IUT of Montpellier-Sète will resign from administrative tasks to its director Matteo Valenza. A first !
Because since the promulgation of the “Research Programming Law” put in place in 2021, secondary school teachers assigned to higher education, numbering 13,000 in France, denounce the difference in treatment with their research colleagues. “For around thirty years, secondary school teachers and teacher-researchers had the same bonus for carrying out administrative tasks. But since 2020, the bonuses for teacher-researchers will double while ours have stagnated”explains Bertrand Gelis, teacher, head of the GEII department, and responsible for internships at the IUT of Montpellier Sète.
From a student’s illness to a department’s budget, these administrative tasks add a significant workload for these professors. “It’s rigorous work, I have 280 students to manage, expenses to allocate… All this is not done instead of my job as a teacher, but in addition to my class hours”worthy of Bertrand Gelis.
Their bonuses will not exceed €3,200 per year, which is half that of their fellow researchers. “It’s not normal because we represent 20% of teachers, but provide 40% of teaching hours, not counting administrative hours!”
“In September, we stop everything”
The resignation of the 50 higher education teachers from their administrative tasks, scheduled for Thursday, June 15 at 2:30 p.m., marks the start of a showdown: “We expect the Ministry of Higher Education to assume its error before September by upgrading our bonuses”, explains the IUT teacher. “If this is not done before September, then we stop everything,” he threatens.
What are the risks for the start of the school year?
Concretely, on the teaching department of this teacher, half of the students will not have timetables, no course manager and no logistical order can be made.
Last December, the members of the IUT council voted unanimously to support the national request for the integration of secondary school teachers into the same compensation scheme as teacher-researchers.
Contacted, management reiterates its support today, “we are faced with agents who are dedicated to public service but are not recognized. The ministry does not seem to understand the workload of teaching staff”estimates the direction of the IUT of Montpellier-Sète.
