Teachers Allegedly Drugged Kindergarten Children in Taiwan: Investigation Underway

Jakarta

Several teachers at a school located in New Taipei City, Taiwan, allegedly drugged a number of kindergarten children with cough syrup containing substances, such as phenobarbital and benzodiazepines. This syrup drug is believed to make these kindergartners addicted.

Police began their investigation in June 2023, after parents raised concerns about their child exhibiting unusual symptoms, such as mood swings and cramps.

Eight students reported positive for small amounts of the psychoactive drugs phenobarbital and benzodiazepines. Children’s symptoms are considered withdrawal symptoms from highly addictive drugs.

Phenobarbital is used in the treatment of epilepsy, while benzodiazepines are a strong type of sleeping pill. It is not clear why the drugs were given to the children, but are thought to be due to their sedative properties. A teacher was also accused of using corporal punishment on preschoolers.

The headmaster of Baoren Kindergarten, and five teachers, have been arrested pending a criminal investigation. The school was ordered to close and paid a fine of 150,000 Taiwan dollars or around Rp. 7 million.

When the Guardian visited the preschool on Wednesday, the office was still open, but staff declined to comment on the situation.

“I have nothing to say,” a Baoren spokesperson said by telephone, quoted by the Guardian.
