Teacher shortage – Around 400 career changers start school in the southwest – Education

The career changers come from different professional groups and start teaching straight away in the new school year. At the same time, they receive a two-year pedagogical qualification and at the end must take the same exam as prospective teachers with a teaching degree. If they have proven themselves for a year, they can be hired on a permanent basis, according to the ministry.

Direct entry for the first time also at Gymnasium and SBBZ

The state wants to combat the shortage of teachers in the southwest by employing new teachers. At the beginning of the last school year, 565 teaching positions were vacant, and last year there were 890. Direct entry was introduced for primary schools and secondary level 1 in the last school year. With the start of the new school year on September 9, direct entry into secondary schools and special education will also be possible.

According to the ministry, most direct entrants start at vocational schools. 236 teachers are starting there for the new school year. The state is employing 59 specialist teachers and technical teachers at the special education and advisory centers (SBBZ), plus 15 academic teachers for special education. 46 career changers are starting at the community, middle, secondary and vocational schools. There are 30 in primary schools and 12 in high schools.

“Direct entry is not only an important lever for securing teaching provision,” said State Secretary Volker Schebesta (CDU). The biographies of the career changers also showed that a professional qualification offers opportunities for further development. His Green Party colleague Sandra Boser emphasized: “Direct entry is an important support for our schools. The wealth of experience of the newly recruited teachers enriches school life and offers new perspectives for everyone involved.”

According to the ministry, career changers are particularly important at the SBBZ. “Direct entry is an essential measure at these schools, which serves to ensure instruction and thus school education for children and young people with special educational needs,” it said.
