Teacher from Antwerp Secondary School Criticizes Unions Over Calls for Reform: “Most Teachers Eager for Change”

“The unions make strong statements, but I hear little criticism from other teachers,” says a teacher from a secondary school in Antwerp (who prefers not to be named). “Moreover, my impression is that most are eager for solid, thorough reform of the profession.”

“Most teachers I know have not yet taken a position. Ultimately, it is only advice. It is one of the few times that teachers are actually involved in drawing up the report. So I don’t understand what inspires the unions to strike and demonstrate.”

“I have the feeling that the unions are now picking out the things that suit their needs. I heard from syndicated colleagues that (in the case of my school) the Christian union COC has not even questioned its own members. In this way, the outspoken opinion of the (limited) top of the unions on thousands of teachers, who are once again labeled as conservative good-for-nothings.”
