A high school teacher in the Queens neighborhood of New York, USA, was arrested Tuesday for allegedly sexually abusing a 14-year-old student, police said.
Melissa Rockensies, a 33-year-old married woman and a professor at the Corona Academy of Arts and Sciences, was arrested on disturbing allegations that she raped a student around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (local time). according to information provided by the police to the New York Post.
It was not clear whether the alleged violation occurred on or off the high school campus.
Rockensies was charged with rape, a criminal sexual act and acting in a manner detrimental to a child under 17, the New York police said.
The teacher was reassigned from the school while the facts are clarified, according to reports.
“This employee has been reassigned from school and students pending the outcome of the arrest and if convicted, we will seek her termination. Nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of our students,” said Jenna Lyle, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education.

“This alleged behavior is extremely worrying and totally unacceptable,” Lyle told local outlet QNS, adding that if Rockensies is convicted, steps will be taken to have her fired.
The New York Post rescued an October 2021 post shared on a Facebook page that appears to belong to the Rockensies, in which he gave recommendations on how to help “children understand consent.”
Part of the infographic published by Rockensies advised adults to ask a child if they would like to give a family member a hug, rather than requiring them to hug their family member.
He also advised parents to make it clear to their children that they should not keep secrets from their family.

Rockensies, who has been a teacher for more than a decade, was arrested at the 112th Precinct Police Station in Forest Hills after police learned of the allegation that she had been having sex with the minor.
NYPD officials said the teen may have been a former student of the school, though it’s unclear if he still attends the same school or if the alleged abuse occurred on campus.
