Most smartphones today have one thing in common: their glossy display, which can be difficult to read in direct sunlight, especially for more affordable phones. However, Chinese company TCL has come up with a solution that we already saw earlier this year at the MWC trade fair in Barcelona as a prototype and it impressed us. It’s called Nxtpaper, a matte display that is designed to resemble the readability of paper. The user interface of the new smartphone even allows users to choose between black and white or color display. Readability under all conditions is a clear priority, and as we experienced with the prototype, it brings almost no disadvantages. In fact, the Nxtpaper display is not a completely new innovation, TCL has been developing it for several years and tablets or notebooks with this display technology have been available (abroad) for some time.
Now, finally, there is also a smartphone. Actually, two, but only one of them will be available in the Czech Republic. TCL has introduced a pair of models, TCL 40 Nxtpaper and TCL 40 Nxtpaper 5G, but only the former will be sold in the Czech Republic. Which is actually an advantage, as the phone does not support 5G networks, but compared to its 5G sibling, it has better features, including a better display. The 5G variant is intended more for operators, but TCL products are not included in the offerings of domestic operators.
In both cases, these are not smartphones with top-of-the-line features; on the contrary, TCL is trying to keep the price low. TCL 40 Nxtpaper will cost CZK 6,499 in the Czech Republic, and customers will receive a flip case and a T-Pen stylus in the package, which allows writing and drawing on the matte display. By the way, the price of this version in Europe is set at EUR 199, which is just under CZK 5,000, but the extra accessories are not included. The 5G version, where it will be sold, will cost EUR 249, which is about CZK 6,000. Both phones will be available for sale in October.
In the case of the model sold in the Czech market, customers will get a very decent mid-range phone. TCL 40 Nxtpaper has a 6.78-inch Full HD+ display with a small notch and a 90Hz refresh rate. Users can adjust not only the brightness but also the color temperature of the display at any time. TCL boasts a range of certifications to prove that the display is eye-friendly.
The device is powered by the MediaTek Helio G88 processor, 8GB of RAM, and has 256GB of user memory. The phone has two SIM slots, with the second slot being hybrid and can be used to expand the memory using a microSD card. The phone has a 5,010mAh battery, with charging up to 33W. The main camera has a resolution of 50 megapixels, complemented by a 5-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 2-megapixel macro camera. The selfie camera has a resolution of 32 megapixels. The phone runs on Android 13.
The 5G variant, which will not be available for sale in the Czech Republic, has a 6.6-inch display with only HD+ resolution and a waterdrop notch (90Hz refresh rate remains), 6GB of RAM, and is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6020 chipset. Again, it runs on Android 13. The main camera is again 50 megapixels, but there are only 2-megapixel additions for macro and depth of field. The front camera has a resolution of eight megapixels.
