Abraam Savvidis is honest. After the two draws last weekend in front of a home crowd against the reigning German champions TK GW Mannheim and TC Großhesselohe, who have been promoted again this season, there were moments “when you thought, crap, we should have won these games”, admits the chairman of the tennis national league club TC BW Neuss.

After winning the first set, Czech Zdenek Kolar, who works for Blau-Weiss, had the opportunity to give the home side a 3-1 lead in the second round against Mannheim’s Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero bring. And against Großhesselohe, the Italian Thomas Fabbiano even had a match point in a duel with Jan-Lennard Struff on his own serve to make it 3-1 in the overall result. The fact that both individuals were lost in the end only grieved the hosts for a short time. With some distance, the outstanding performance in particular stuck in the memory. “Mannheim and Großhesselohe are particularly good after all,” emphasized Savvidis, “so it shouldn’t have been a surprise if we didn’t get a point at all.”
