“TBI Blue Alert issued for suspect in fatal Blounty County shooting”

A tragic incident occurred in Blount County, Tennessee, on February 8th, when a suspect shot two Blount County sheriff’s deputies during a traffic stop, resulting in the death of one officer. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has issued a statewide Blue Alert for the suspect, Kenneth Wayne DeHart, and authorities are actively searching for him.

The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. on Sevierville Road in Maryville. Deputies Greg McCowan and Shelby Eggers initiated a traffic stop on an SUV, which was being driven by DeHart. However, the suspect refused to cooperate and refused to exit the vehicle. Despite deploying a Taser, the deputies were unable to subdue DeHart.

During the encounter, DeHart pulled out a firearm and opened fire, striking both deputies. Tragically, Deputy McCowan succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Deputy Eggers was fortunate to have only suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was treated and released from the hospital.

Following the shooting, DeHart fled from the scene, initiating a manhunt by multiple law enforcement agencies. Authorities are urging anyone with information about DeHart’s whereabouts to contact the Blount County Sheriff’s Office or the TBI. A reward of $10,000 is being offered for any information leading to his capture.
