TB Case Discovery Must Increase For The Realization Of TB Elimination
Pulmonary tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by infection with the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis which is still a problem in the field of public health, especially in developing countries such as Indonesia. The challenges faced are related to aspects of the disease itself starting from case detection, treatment process, and obstacles in the success of treatment.
Tuberculosis is one of the main causes of death worldwide, and Indonesia is included in the list of 30 countries with “High Burden Countries” (HBC) status, which means these countries have a high burden of tuberculosis. In 2021, the number of Tuberculosis (TB) cases in Indonesia is estimated to reach 969,000 cases, or the equivalent of one person being infected with TB every 33 seconds. This figure has increased by 17% from the previous year, namely 824,000 cases in 2020. The incidence of TB in Indonesia has reached 354 cases per 100,000 population. There are also around 28,000 cases of TB patients with drug resistance and 144,000 cases of death from this disease. In 2022, the number of TB cases that have been found and reported to the TB Information System (SITB) is around 717,941 cases, with a TB detection coverage rate of up to 74% of the target which should be 85%. TB treatment success rate reaches 86%.
The low number of case findings made us aware of the need for improvement. This is in accordance with a statement from the Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, who targets that starting January 2023, TB examinations should reach 60,000 cases per month. The greater the number of cases found, the greater the number of cases receiving treatment. This effort is made for the realization of TB elimination in 2023.
