Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Tokyo has not only attracted fans from all over the world but has also generated a significant economic boost for Japan. According to a report by Economic Impact.NET, the concert is estimated to pump a staggering $228 million (¥34.1 billion) into the country, with $162.7 million (¥24.3 billion) directly benefiting Tokyo.
Mitsumasa Etou, the author of the report and a part-time lecturer at Tokyo City University, believes that the ripple effect of the concert will be even greater. He suggests that if fans from all over Japan who come to the Tokyo Dome to see Taylor Swift also engage in sightseeing activities, it will further contribute to the country’s economy through additional spending on lodging, transportation, and other tourism-related expenses.
This is not the first time Taylor Swift has brought her world tours to the Tokyo Dome. She previously opened the 1989 World Tour on May 5, 2015, and concluded her Reputation Stadium Tour on November 21, 2018. During her recent performance at the Eras Tour, Swift expressed her excitement about returning to Tokyo after four years and thanked her dedicated fans for their support.
The Tokyo Dome sold a total of 220,000 seats for the four nights of the Eras Tour, with 55,000 seats available each night. Ticket prices ranged from $59 to $201 (¥8,800-¥30,000) for standard tickets and $354 to $823 (¥52,800-¥122,800) for VIP packages, according to the Japanese Eras Tour website.
The popularity of Taylor Swift’s concert in Tokyo attracted fans from all over the world. Zachary Travis, a 31-year-old fan from Phoenix, purchased a $1,300 ticket on StubHub.com but faced disappointment when he arrived in Japan and discovered that the seller had not sent the ticket. Determined not to miss the show, Travis met a helpful woman in his hotel who advised him to check the Eras Tour website for newly released tickets. Fortunately, he was able to secure floor tickets for all four shows at a total cost of $804 (¥120,000), even spending less money than he initially paid for the single ticket on StubHub. Travis’s enthusiasm for the concert extended to merchandise purchases, as he happily mentioned bringing a duffle bag to accommodate his haul.
The impact of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour extended beyond Japan, with fans from the Asia-Pacific region traveling to Tokyo to attend the concert. Maxine Tan, who flew from Manila, Philippines with her mother, expressed that the price tag was not a concern for her due to the profound impact Swift has had on her life. Tan proudly displayed her glittery green jacket, a replica of Swift’s 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour coat, which her friend had made. She described Swift as her childhood and adulthood hero and expressed her hope of one day meeting her in person to thank her for changing her life.
Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has not only delighted fans but has also provided a significant economic boost for Japan. The influx of tourists and their spending on various activities and services has contributed to the country’s economy. As Taylor Swift continues her tour in other parts of the Asia-Pacific region, it is expected that similar economic benefits will be observed in those locations as well.
