Taylor Swift’s Dispute over Private Plane Emissions and Celebrity Stalking Heads to Court

She calls it stalking, he calls it public information. Now the dispute may end up in court.

The reason is that 21-year-old Jack Sweeney tracks the artist’s private plane, writes Bloomberg.

“You have engaged in stalking and harassing behavior, including repeatedly posting real-time and precise information about our client’s location.”

That is what the law firm Venable LLP writes in a letter to Sweeney, of which the news agency has obtained a copy.

“Life or Death”

“This may be a game for you or a path to riches and fame, but for our client it is a matter of life and death,” it continues.

Sweeny uses publicly available data from the US FAA to track the private jets of a number of billionaires, celebrities, politicians and Russian oligarchs.

“You should expect your private jet to be tracked, whether I do it or not,” Sweeney said in a statement.

“After all, it is public information.”

Emissions princess?

Swift’s frequent travel has been increasingly commented on on social media in recent months.

In 2022, Swift topped the list of celebrities with the biggest carbon emissions, according to a report from the analysis company Yard. Her travel business then contributed to the emission of nearly 8,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

In comparison, an average Norwegian (which is quite high in a world context) emitted 6.73 tonnes of CO₂ in 2020, according to the most recently available figures from The World Bank.

Swift has compensated for the emissions associated with her ongoing Eras tour, according to a spokesperson. She has done this by allegedly buying CO₂ quotas for more than twice what the emissions “cost”.

Argued with Musk

Sweeney has previously been in a billionaire dispute due to his tracking business.

At the end of 2022, his Twitter account @elonjet was closed. It was used to post updates about Twitter owner (now X) Elon Musk’s use of private jets.

Now the account is up again, but the updates come with a delay of 24 hours, it is stated.
