Everything Taylor Swift has moved us this year
Since the beginning of her career, Swift has consistently grabbed the headlines – from their romantic interests up to Selling their masterpieces and the resulting new releases she made headlines.
And yet it feels like 2023 has been their biggest year yet. With a record-breaking world touran accompanying concert film, and a show-stopping, effusive relationship with one of the NFL’s best players, Swift wins the year in a way most people can only dream of.
To make matters worse, she was… Time Magazine’s Person of the Year ” – a title used for culture changers like former President Barack Obama (2008 and 2012), persecuted journalists like Jamal Khashoggi, the was killedbecause he disagreed with the Saudi government(2018), and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (2022). Swift’s appeal is so strong that it rivals that of heads of state.
In honor of one of Swift’s best years yet, here’s a look at all the things she made us love this year.
The Kansas City Chiefs offense
When Swift started dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, arguably one of the best players at his position, the internet literally imploded. Fresh off her breakup with actor Joe Alwyn, Swift’s new fling with Kelce quickly became a hit with fans, as Swifties dug up and analyzed Kelce’s old posts on X, formerly known as Twitter every one of his movements.
Swift’s presence at Chiefs games also became a constant “Where’s Waldo?”, as the star was frequently photographed cheering on his new friend alongside the likes of gymnast Simone Biles and Kelce’s mother Donna.
Her star power was so strong that the Kelce jerseys for sale increased by 400% and the Chiefs ticket prices skyrocketed as Swifties ran to the games hoping to catch a glimpse of them. During transmissionsbecameSwift andtheir followers toDismay for some NFL fansto aan integral part of NFL commentators’ commentary.
There’s not much that can outshine football in the US, but this year Swift did just that.
Apparently ranch
Every detail of Swift’s attendance at Chiefs games was scrutinized, including what she ate. In one case, her meal consisted of chicken tenders, ketchup and, according to a fan account “apparently ranch”.
The phrase quickly became a household word, so much so that Heinz developed a limited edition “Ketchup and Seemingly Ranch” sauce – a wink to fans and, frankly, a marketing ploy.
Having so much power that your favorite chicken side dishes are taken over by a national brand? It’s just another Sunday for Swift.
Public transportation
During Swift’s sold-out Eras Tour, fans relied on buses, subways and trains to get to venues – enlivening many cities’ public transportation systems.
Hotels and restaurants also benefited, and Swift’s tour led to a boost to local economies across the country – a big win for many, as some continue to an impending recession fear. Like that Wall Street Journal said: “It’s just Taylornomics”.
Trendy restaurants in Manhattan
Eating out quickly may not be a concern for some. But, like Rachel Handler in Vulture, Swift is neither your average celebrity nor your average middle-class guest. And yet, for a while last fall, Swift was regularly photographed heading out with a rotating group of friends to some of Manhattan’s hottest restaurants and bars.
However, there’s no telling why Swift did this: did she simply have no food at home? Did she want to go out for a drink with her friends? Was your private chef on vacation? Whatever the reason, it caused a brief stir in the Manhattan dining scene. Handler retraced Swift’s steps around town and asked Emilio of Emilio’s Ballato what it’s like when Swift eats at your restaurant. His answer was simple: “What can I tell you? She eats, she pays and she leaves.” Celebrities are just like us.
The details of the film rental
Swift’s concert film “Eras,” shot over three nights during her residency at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium in August, broke records on its opening weekend. It grossed $96 million, making it the highest-grossing film ever, according to AMC Opening weekend im Inland.
But that’s not the only way Swift changed the game with her concert film. Swift produced the film herself and distributed it directly through AMC Theaters, rather than through a traditional Hollywood distributor. This allowed her to cut out the usual middlemen at the big Hollywood studios and get herself and her team ensure a much higher profit.
This route is definitely unconventional and could be a tactic used by other big stars too. Beyoncé made a similar move for her own film about the Renaissance tour, and while few have the star power of Queen Bey and Swift, it might be a trend worth watching.
Core of the summer camp
In “You’re on Your Own, Kid,” Swift urges listeners to “make friendship bracelets” instead of longing for love. The line is only said once, but once was enough: friendship bracelets were suddenly everywhere, even though the song was released last year.
Swifties stormed their local craft stores to carefully thread together friendship bracelets as part of their Eras tour look – and made the bracelets a permanent fixture on the tour. Even celebrities wore the trend. Nicole Kidman received some bracelets when she was at Swift’s show, as well Jennifer Lawrence and of course Swift herself.
Even their security guard wasn’t immune to them Memorabilia. If you see these bracelets on the runways next year, don’t be surprised.
Monopolies and Ticketmaster
Late last year, Live Nation, Ticketmaster’s parent company, faced intense criticism for blocking advance sales for Swift’s upcoming Eras Tour had botchedso millions of fans either couldn’t buy tickets or didn’t have tickets despite buying them.
Although Ticketmaster and Live Nation have long been criticized for their monopoly power over ticket sales, the incident was a major catalyst for Congress to take action against the company. The legislators have Live Nation’s chief financial officer in January squeezed outand a Senate subcommittee has just last month issued a subpoena to the company requesting documents regarding “ticket prices, fees and resale practices.”
Getting the US government to kick into high gear after a company mishandled ticket sales for your upcoming tour is not a power that many artists have. No matter what happens, you’ll have Swift to thank for at least some of it.
