Taylor Swift won video and song of the year at the MTV Video Music Awards, two of several trophies she was in the running for as the most nominated artist at the star-studded ceremony, Reuters reported.
Swift, who is on hiatus from her record-breaking Eras Tour, walked away with 11 nominations. The 33-year-old star was competing for artist of the year in a category packed with all-female competition for the first time, from Beyoncé to Carol Zy and Doja Kett.
“Anti-Hero,” Swift’s account of insecurity with its chorus of “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me,” earned her two No. awards show. The singer looked thrilled to be presented with one of the statuettes by members of 1990s boy band NSYNC, the group who won the award for best pop video 20 years ago.
“I had your dolls!” Swift told the band members, which included Lance Bass and Justin Timberlake. “You are pop music personified. So to receive this from your golden pop hands is too much.”
“Anti-Hero” is also up for video of the year, a trophy Swift will receive in 2022. This time, she faced competition from, among others, Miley Cyrus’ survival anthem “Flowers.”
Stray Kids, a group formed through a reality TV show, won the award for best K-pop.
Performers at the ceremony, which took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, were Demi Lovato, Lil Wayne, Olivia Rodrigo and host Nicki Minaj.
Colombian pop singer Shakira was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. After performing a number of her hits including “Hips Don’t Lie” and “Whenever”, the singer greeted her fans.
“Thank you so much for being my army and helping me fight all my battles,” she said.
