After Elon Musk, Taylor Swift is now taking action against accounts on social networks that publicize flights from her private jet. This is reported by the Washington Post, citing a cease and desist order that the US musician’s lawyers sent to the college student responsible for the accounts. For her client, the matter is “a matter of life and death”, while for the 21-year-old it may be a game or a path to fame, it is claimed. The accounts increased Swift’s constant fear for her own safety. A specific incident in which one of the accounts was used to persecute the musician was not mentioned, but the lawyers spoke of indications of a connection.

Preparation of public data
Sweeney operates a whole range of accounts on the short message service X/Twitter, Bluesky and Mastodon, but also on Instagram and Facebook, which send messages based on publicly available data when private jets of certain celebrities take off. At the end of 2022, this brought him into conflict with Elon Musk, who had an account there blocked after the Twitter takeover. Around the time of Swift’s cease and desist order last December, Meta had the accounts on Instagram and Facebook blocked, writes the US newspaper. The reason given was violations of the platforms’ data protection rules.
Because the accounts also list how much CO₂ was emitted per flight based on the flight data, they served at least once as the basis for an analysis of the biggest environmental offenders and celebrities. Taylor Swift topped the 2022 list. Even later, there was always criticism of her aircraft’s trips and the associated emissions. Sweeney now assures The Verge that his work is not intended to cause harm, “I actually think she made some good songs.” But he believes in transparency and public information. His accounts simply make publicly available data more accessible.
Sweeney isn’t the only one who feels reminded of Elon Musk’s actions by the letter. At the time, he justified the blocking with possible dangers, specifically with attacks on himself and his family. The account @ElonJet only published information about flights, but not about the whereabouts of Musk himself. Musk had previously unsuccessfully offered the student money for the deletion. After loud criticism, Musk allowed the account to return, but its posts have since been removed with a 24-hour delay. There are no such restrictions on Mastodon, where the account has an impressive 68,000 followers – Swift’s Jet only has 1,500.
