This year’s MTV Video Music Awards were dominated by women. The focus was on Taylor Swift, who set a record with seven awards. In her speech, she also got political – and called on her fans to vote.
Taylor Swift continues to attract attention: first with her support for US presidential candidate Kamala Harris, now as the winner of the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA). At the ceremony on Long Island in New York, she won the coveted trophy for Video of the Year with her video for the song “Fortnight”.
In this category, the 34-year-old superstar beat out Billie Eilish, Doja Cat and Eminem, among others. Swift scooped up other awards, including in the categories of Artist of the Year, Song of the Summer, Best Collaboration (with Post Malone) and Pop.
Swift urges fans to vote
This makes her the big winner of the evening and her new awards put her on a par with Beyoncé. Both have received 30 awards at the VMAs over the course of their careers – more than any other artist.
In her acceptance speech, she also talked about the presidential election in November and appealed to her fans to register to vote. Shortly after the TV debate between Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and her Republican rival Donald Trump, Swift expressed her support for Harris on Instagram.
Carpenter and Roan honored
Sabrina Carpenter won her first ever VMA trophy in the Song of the Year category with her hit song “Espresso.” The award in the Rock category went to Lenny Kravitz for “Human.”
Chappell Roan (“Good Luck, Babe!”) accepted the award for best new artist and dedicated it to all queer and trans people who are driving pop music forward.
Katy Perry receives honorary award
US singer Katy Perry received the honorary “Video Vanguard Award”. The trophy pays tribute to the influence of the respective award winner on the music scene. US rapper Megan Thee Stallion was the host on stage.
The MTV Video Music Awards have been presented since 1984. Fans can vote for their favorites online.
