All taxi drivers can now invite passengers at the city gate. Previously, this stand was reserved for holders of an A license, as were the stands on Turnerstrasse and in the Wülflinger underpass.

A new era is beginning for taxi drivers in Winterthur. When the cantonal taxi law comes into force on January 1, 2024, the two-class system with A and B licenses will end. The city council decided this at its last meeting of the year.

Previously, only holders of an A license were allowed to take passengers at the main station. This is now permitted for all drivers who have a taxi license, a cantonal vehicle permit and a parking permit from the city. The city police issue temporary stand permits for a fee of 300 francs.

The number of taxis is no longer limited

The city also no longer limits the number of taxi licenses. Most recently, it had granted 44 A and 81 B licenses. Taxi drivers from the region and other cantons can now also invite passengers in Winterthur if they have the required permits.

At its meeting, the city council also repealed the tariff regulations for the taxi industry, according to the minutes. Taxi drivers can thus determine the prices for their trips themselves. The only requirement is to indicate the applicable prices on the right side of the vehicle, whereby the numbers and letters must be at least one centimeter tall.

In autumn 2024, the Department of Safety and Environment wants to present a new regulation for the stands. This will also apply to driving services such as Uber. The department will have to adhere to the requirements of the cantonal taxi law.
