Taxi Drivers in the Rhône to Block Lyon in Protest against Health Insurance Agreement

Discontent is gaining ground. Considering themselves “attacked” in their profession, taxi drivers in the Rhône are calling for Lyon to be blocked on Monday. Two snail operations are planned from 8 a.m., the profession announces in a press release. One of the convoys will leave Dardilly to reach the city center of Lyon, and the other will set off from the Gerland sports center.

Taxis want to protest against the agreement imposed on them by Health Insurance concerning the transport of sick people. From now on, the journeys of medical patients must be shared via an online platform.

Shared journeys

In other words, patients are forced to share the same taxi to go to the hospital, to treatment or examination centers. The idea is to reduce the cost of travel for Social Security by 100 million euros per year between 2025 and 2027, as well as pollution.

Nearly 15% of journeys are already shared, with incentive schemes for the most sharing carriers. But patient refusal remains a major obstacle. Without a valid medical reason to refuse it, patients no longer have the right to third-party payment and will therefore have to advance the costs. They will then only be reimbursed on the basis of the price of shared transport. What taxis deplore.

“Although it is a commercial activity, it is above all a social activity, primordial, important and crucial for our country”, estimates Pascal Wilder, spokesperson for the federation of independent taxis of the Rhône.
