Taxi drivers in Pollença and Alcúdia suffer losses of 90%

Taxi drivers in Pollença and Alcúdia suffer losses of 90%

The economic situation caused by the coronavirus has been very pronounced in the taxi sector.

This is the case of the Part Forana taxi drivers for whom the season has been very bad, as their activity has been drastically reduced.

The Port d’Alcúdia taxi rank is, in a normal year, one of the busiest points on the Island. In the area, more than 100 services could be performed every hour in the busiest time slots. This Saturday there was hardly any movement and more than half a dozen vehicles were waiting under the marquee.

The drop in turnover

In general, taxi drivers in Pollença and Alcúdia estimate their current activity at 10% of last year. The taxi drivers in this area decided at the beginning of the season to set shifts so that only half of the fleet was on the street at the same time and the little activity could be better distributed.

“We didn’t even know about the 2008 crisis, the last few years have been great, with a lot of work.”

The downturn has been very marked in recent weeks. Although the month of July was a lazy month, but even with some activity, August has been a very bad month.

In Port de Pollença, no shift system has been established in the taxi fleet.

Taxi drivers describe the season as “disastrous.” The general drop in activity is also compounded by the drop in jobs for hired drivers. Many taxi drivers hire drivers for night hours during peak season. This year their number has dropped to more than 90%.
