A taxi driver was released with a fright on Wednesday afternoon when a meter-high tree suddenly fell over on the Parmentierweg in Eindhoven at the place where he wanted to turn. He was then trapped in a dead end section of the road.
The taxi driver was on his way to pick up customers when things went wrong. The man told a 112 correspondent that he was just about to turn around when he saw the tree coming down. He had just enough time to reverse the car a bit.
The tree blocked the road, trapping the driver between the colossal trunk on one side and a fence on the other. The fire brigade was quickly on the spot to free the taxi. That turned out to be quite a job due to the thick trunk. The tree was finally sawn into short pieces. They have been temporarily placed in the roadside, so that the road is clear again.
It is still unclear how the tree fell so suddenly. A lamppost was severely damaged in the fall.
