A sudden acid attack occurred in Cancun, a popular resort in Mexico. This happened when Uber, a ride-hailing company, started to target tourists, and some taxi drivers began to overdo it.
According to local media such as Millenio on the 6th (local time), a taxi driver poured hydrochloric acid into an Uber vehicle while arguing with an Uber driver near a hotel near Malecontahamar in Cancun, Quintanaoro the afternoon before. As a result, part of the door and side mirror of the Uber vehicle were damaged.
Fortunately, there were no casualties and the taxi driver was immediately arrested by the police. The taxi driver said that he decided to give the victim 2,000 pesos (about 152,000 won) in the name of repair costs and settlement money.
Recently, the taxi industry’s excessive checks against Uber are continuing here. It is a level that has emerged as a serious social problem in the past few years. It is to the extent that we can witness disturbances such as passenger interception, driver assault, and vehicle damage.
In addition, taxi drivers threaten Uber drivers in groups or interfere with driving by sharing photos of Uber license plates. Last month, two taxi drivers on Yaxchiyan Street in Cancun mistook a black van carrying foreigners for an Uber and threatened them.
Earlier in January, a local court ruled that there was no problem with the operation of car sharing companies, not accepting the argument of the taxi industry that ‘livelihoods are threatened by unfair competition’. In April, the state legislature even passed an amendment to the bill officially allowing ride-sharing companies to operate. However, the aggressive behavior of taxi drivers does not seem to stop.
Agueda Esperilla Soto, a spokesperson for Uber drivers in Cancun, called for tougher action against the perpetrators, saying, “The crime continues because there is no adequate punishment for those who attack Uber drivers.”
