“Taxi Driver”: Robert De Niro taxi driver in the streets of New York

OUR OPINION (****) : A cult film by Martin Scorsese which tells the descent into hell of an ordinary man embodied by a Robert De Niro as inhabited as he is hallucinated, who no longer supports the decay and violence of his city and becomes a vigilante.

THE STORY
In New York, a young man from the Midwest, former marine, veteran of the Vietnam War, insomniac, is a taxi driver at night. He meets a young woman working with a senator. She pushes him away after he takes her to see an X movie.
Witness then actor of a violent scene in a convenience store, he buys a revolver and trains. Then he wants to get a 12-year-old minor off the sidewalk. He will try to kill the senator, later in the street, he will shoot the teenager’s pimp, then the boss of the brothel, then the maffioso who was in the room with the young girl. He is injured but survives. Become a hero, appeased, he takes his taxi.
OUR OPINION (****)
By filming the descent into hell of a man like any other who can no longer bear the decline and violence of his city, Martin Scorsese gained notoriety with this “punch” film shot in 1975, which can be described as masterpiece.
The entire production, the actors (De Niro in the lead) are forever inscribed on the hills of Hollywood. Not a wrinkle, not a dated dialogue, including Robert De Niro’s famous line at his mirror: ” You’re talking to me ? of an incredible modernity, which still gives shivers.
This taxi driver is scary like the city they travel through at night with its share of broken beings who survive in the gloomy streets, bars, hotels…
Scorsese’s driver is not a heroic vigilante, he is an angry weakling, turned violent by his powerlessness to change anything in this city, which has become a kind of Sodom and Gomorrah. « Taxi driver » received the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1976. A cult film, to be seen again and again.
