In a correspondence dated September 11, 2023, the General Union of Workers of Cameroon asks the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Grégoire Owona, to convene the National Consultative Labor Commission. The challenge of such a meeting, specifies the press release from Isaac Bissala, confederal president of the General Union of Workers of Cameroon, is to avoid future demonstrations, following an imposition of the retirement pension.
In fact, the tax administration contacted the CNPS to ask it to tax retirement pensions. Something that the CEO of the CNPS, he reveals, declined, then invited unionists and pensioners, with the aim of informing them of this situation, on September 8, after the Minfi, in a letter signed on September 6 -, having leaked on social networks, proved him right. “The Director General of the Cnps today invited the union confederations and associations of retirees to inform them on the issues relating to the taxation of retirement pensions as required by the General Directorate of Taxes,” indicates the final press release. at the end of this consultation.
Following the information session, the union confederations and retirees’ associations held a consultation session with a view to deciding on the issue. During this, pensioners indicated that: “the tax on pensions is inappropriate, illegal and inhumane. Any levy made by the Dgi on this fact will be considered not only as an unjustifiable desire to attack the already weak purchasing power of the elderly but also as a deliberate desire to tarnish the social peace so dear to the President of the Republic. .
Moreover, trade unionists therefore wish that any project relating to the taxation of retirement pensions be first submitted to the national consultative labor commission. Finally, the union confederations and associations of retirees warn the public authorities of the serious consequences which could result from the persistence of such an initiative among retirees.
