NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James, a major legal nemesis of former President Donald Trump, is expected to win a second term, according to our sister network NBC 4.
James was running against Republican Michael Henry, a commercial trial attorney backed by several police unions.
The Democrat had a 70.9% lead with 1,151,255 votes when 26% of the votes were counted, according to shows the report of our sister network NBC. Michael Henry had 29.1% of the vote (472.372).
James, 64, made history when she took office in January 2019. She is the first African American woman to be elected to a state office, the state’s first African American Attorney General, and the first woman elected to office.
He began investigating Trump as soon as he took office, suing the Republican in September claiming that he and his company misled banks and others about the value of their assets.
James also clashed with one of his party’s stars, who oversaw a sexual harassment investigation last year that hastened the resignation of Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Other enemies included the National Rifle Association, which the prosecutor is suing for alleged personal relationships by executives; manufacturers and distributors of opioid analgesics; the Roman Catholic Church, on which his office is investigating for the management of the abuse of priests; and the New York City Police, who are suing for the treatment of protesters after the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis police.
Like many New York Republicans this year, Henry campaigned on fears of rising crime and unwavering support for law enforcement. He favors loosening arms restrictions and less regulation of activities.
Henry said James’s office “was put together in the service of political ambition”. She criticized her for pursuing Trump and getting involved in the investigation of Cuomo when he planned to possibly replace him as governor.
James briefly ran for governor last year after Cuomo’s resignation, but he gave up the effort after about two months.
When Trump was president, James sued his administration dozens of times, challenging policies on the environment, immigration, education, health care and other issues. He also fought against Trump over his plans to include a question about immigration status in the census and won the US Supreme Court.
Trump has repeatedly criticized James’s actions against him, saying they are driven by “racism” and political considerations.
Prior to taking office in 2018, James called Trump a “swindler”, a “carnival thief” and a “fear mover”.
After a leak from the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, James promised to use his office to protect abortion rights in the state.
James, who grew up and still lives in Brooklyn, also made a deeply personal revelation, saying she had an abortion about two decades ago.
