Tatra’s Vision: A Luxurious SUV Inspired by the Brand’s Rich Heritage

There is little chance that Tatra will start production of passenger cars – certainly soon. Nevertheless, sometimes in the editorial office we fantasize about today’s Tatra passenger cars and imagine what luxury cars of the traditional Kopřivnica brand would look like today.

We teamed up with this useful teenager again, but this time we approached the modern personal Tatra bike scene in a completely different way. And we came up with a much more difficult task for Daniel.

When you think of a personal Tatra, you will certainly immediately think of models like the 603, 613 or 87, i.e. luxury limousines. That is why most attempts to “revive” the Tatras happen precisely at the level of large sedans with a special design, which greatly influenced the concept with the engine behind the rear axle.

But we said to ourselves that we want to create a car that reflects the mood of the current market. And since the offer of luxury and ultra-luxury cars is starting to be dominated by SUV models, we decided that our proposal must represent “es-ú-vé”. Big, majestic, almost opulent. Just so it can proudly compete with cars like Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Bentley Bentayga or Range Rover.

At the same time, we wanted our design to reflect the rich history of the personal Tatra mountains. “That was the hardest part. Designing a large luxury SUV is not that complicated, but bringing the spirit of classic Tatra limousines was the biggest challenge,” said Daniel Novák.

In the end, he came up with a vision of a slim, aerodynamic body, which is decorated with lower T-shaped headlights marking the central light found on several historical Tatra cars, for example the 77 , 87 and 603. Along with the unusual lamps there is a clean face mask made of dark blue plastic.

The profile is a bit sporty, inspired by SUV-coupe fashion. However, thanks to its long wheelbase, generous dimensions and roofline, our modern Tatra offers plenty of space for passengers in the back, so even as an SUV it is ready to provide first class comfort in the rear seats. However, Daniel designed the car with the view that the owner will also drive it, so he expects luxury in the front as well. This is a difference compared to its predecessors, which relied on a professional driver.

The rear section is dominated by a unique roof spoiler, followed by a hidden wing extending over the rear window. It is, in fact, a design element referring to the iconic aerodynamic models. The lamps are again solved with minimal LED technology. The bikes were also inspired by history.
