There are numerous important buildings such as the baroque Zwinger and the Semper Opera, where the famous Saxon State Orchestra Dresden plays. The Striezelmarkt, founded in 1434, is considered one of the oldest and most famous Christmas markets in Germany.

The historic city on the Elbe has also had to cope with several strokes of fate. During air raids from February 13 to 15, 1945, large parts of the city were badly damaged by British and American bombers and many residents were killed. Reconstruction continued until the 1990s.
