Among other things, the creation of dining and leisure areas, hospitality units, but also with mild agricultural production activities, such as the revival of viticulture and olive groves. The planned interventions and activities are expected to have significant benefits for the national economy and the tourism product of the capital, as it is estimated that they will attract more than 1 million visitors annually.

The owner of the area is the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, the owner of the project is the Ministry of Culture, while the Strategic Importance Contracts Unit of TAIPED is designated as the body for maturation and carrying out a tender process for the restoration and utilization of the properties in Tatoi, intended for hospitality, focus and recreation with the goal of faster completion of the project.

The importance of the project

The Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kostis Hatzidakis, said: “The upgrading and utilization of part of the former royal estate of Tatoi is a project with threefold importance. First, environmental as a large area next to the capital will be protected with the infrastructure projects that will be built and developed in terms of protection and respect for the environment. Secondly, economic which is not negligible. It is estimated that with the completion of the works, the estate will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, while areas that are currently abandoned will be used for tourism and agricultural use. The third benefit is related to the protection of modern architectural heritage and respect for historical memory. The protection of historical memory has nothing to do with the state regime, but it is a rule that applies in all modern European countries.”

The Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, said: “The project of restoration, promotion and exploitation of the former royal estate of Tatoi is one of the emblematic projects of the Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Already in 2019, the Ministry of Culture, through its competent services, is carrying out a complex and multi-level project aimed at the performance of the museum infrastructures, with the monumental complex of the Palace at the top, and the functional infrastructure networks, in 2025. Today, with the signature of of this Agreement, in collaboration with TAIPED, we proceed to the next phase, that of the maturation and preparation of the tender for the restoration and utilization of the spaces that have already been determined – based on the procedures provided for in the institutional framework – for hospitality, catering and recreation. It is very important, not only to proceed with the restoration and creation of the cultural spaces – the program is ongoing and it is estimated at around 60 million euros -, but to be able to create a space that can maintain itself. Therefore, the involvement first of TAIPED and then of the private initiative are necessary. The goal of all of us is for Attica to acquire a unique multi-thematic peri-urban area of culture, greenery and recreation, which combines historical memory with respect for the natural environment and sustainability, with an important social footprint and development potential.”
