Tata Motors Chooses UK Over Spain for European Gigafactory, Aiding UK Stellantis Woes

Aragon may have lost its second battery factory in a few months after the departure of the Volkswagen plant to Sagunto (Valencia). The Indian group Tata Motors opts to install its next gigafactory for the European market in Somerset (United Kingdom) instead of the Zaragoza town of Zuera.

The British government has counterattacked by offering a major aid package to convince Tata Motors to build its battery plant in the country instead of Zuera’s option, Bloomberg reported. However, Tata’s decision is not final, so a reconsideration in the final fight would still be possible.

The news comes shortly after the UK government received a warning from Stellantis to close its plants in the country due to battery supply difficulties. The automobile group warned of the impossibility of complying with the percentage of purchase of batteries provided for in the Brexit agreement. The British Executive took note of the warning, especially after another gigafactory project in the country failed.

Points against Zuera

The United Kingdom recently lost another gigafactory project from the British group Britishvolt, which had announced an investment of 4.34 billion euros. The lack of an investment partner caused the project to be rejected, despite the significant public aid that the British Government had promised to give.

Zuera also had to compete with the UK location of the Jaguar Land Rover factories, brands that are owned by Tata Motors. The Indian company already announced at the beginning of the year its intention to install a battery factory for electric vehicles in Europe, in order to accelerate the electrification of Jaguar Land Rover. This was stated at the India Auto Expo car show held in Delhi by the financial director of Tata Motors, Pathamadai Balaji, who also pointed out that the battery cells manufactured in Europe will be sold to other car brands, beyond Tata Motors and Jaguar Land. Rover.
