– I’m not sure how writing TV jokes about organ transplantation has become a thing, but that’s how it has unfortunately become, writes Selena Gomez (29) on Twitter.
The American artist and actor has in many years suffered from the disease lupus, which is a rheumatic disease that leads to inflammation in the body and can attack organs such as the skin, joints, cells in the blood and kidneys, according to Norwegian Rheumatic Association.
Previously, she has received chemotherapy for the disease, but in 2017 she underwent a kidney transplant to survive the disease.
The 29-year-old is now raging against the TV series “The Good Fight”, which in a recent episode refers to the operation Gomez underwent four years ago.
– I hope that at the next writing session, when one of these tasteless jokes is presented, that it is immediately recorded and does not appear on the screen.
«Cancel culture»
It is the fans who have informed the superstar about the episode of “The Good Fight”.
Here is a scene where the characters have a brainstorming session on which jokes fit in a TV series. The group further wonders which topics should be avoided, where the character Jay emphasizes that comedians currently “need permission to joke”.
They conclude that what is taboo, ie not allowed to make fun of, is necrophilia, autism and “Selena Gomez ‘kidney transplant”.
Variety has, on the other hand, spoken to a source who has been close to the TV production. The source says that the fans and the way they refer to the scene are taken out of context.
– If you watch the whole episode, the reference to Selena Gomez is part of a discussion that the characters have. The discussion is about topics that are not okay to make fun of. It all deals with the idea of ”cancel culture” and being boycotted to tell a bad joke. The reference to Selena Gomez is that her kidney transplant is not something you can joke about.
