Sweden will play play-off this spring for a place at the Qatar World Cup 2022. Both players and leaders in the Swedish national team have previously been critical of the rule that warnings follow from the qualifying group game into the play-off play-off.
– Apparently you should have read through all these rules before you started playing the qualifier to have views on it. But I must say that it is strange when you come from different competitions and bring yellow cards. I do not like when it is not fair play. I do not think that is the case, said national team captain Janne Andersson The football channel recently.
Now, however, information comes that indicates that the national team players who are on a yellow card can breathe a sigh of relief.
According to credible ESPN, Fifa turns to the play-offs in the matter of accompanying warnings. Sources to the newspaper state that Fifa is ready to meet the national team and scrap the warning system, which has had to endure harsh criticism from several federations.
For the change to take effect, however, Uefa needs to request that the rule be changed, something that has not yet been done according to ESPN.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Emil Krafth were warned in the last World Cup qualifier against Spain and will continue to be suspended in the upcoming play-off semi-final. However, eight other players, who currently risk missing a possible play-off final in the event of a yellow card in the semi-final, could breathe a sigh of relief – if the rule change is over.
The players who are on a yellow card after the group game are Isaac Kiese Thelin, Ludwig Augustinsson, Alexander Isak, Kristoffer Olsson, Viktor Claesson, Victor Nilsson Lindelöf, Mattias Svanberg and Joakim Nilsson. The national team captain Janne Andersson is also on a warning and risks suspension.
