It was in the match between Nice and Marseille as chaos erupted. It all started with the away team’s Dimitri Payet getting a bottle thrown at him – which the midfielder threw back towards the stands. It made several Nice supporters lose everything – and storm the pitch.
Pictures shortly after the incident showed how Marseille players had suffered abrasions and started bleeding after the supporters went on a physical attack. Marseille refused to continue playing – while Nice wanted to continue. The match delegate followed in Nice’s footsteps and said it would be completed. But the away team stood their ground. The consequence was that Nice was awarded a 3-0 win.
– We must set a precedent for French football. The judge was with us and confirmed to us that safety was not guaranteed. His decision was to cancel the match but the match delegates decided to restart it. That is not acceptable to us, he said Marseilles president Pablo Longoria according to RMC.
At the same time, there were reports that a supporter was injured. According to Bold.DK, someone in Marseille’s management staff attacked a supporter – who was taken to hospital.
Nice has launched an investigation into the scandal scenes and writes, among other things, that the supporters involved must be severely punished.
