Tasks: Leaving Canada for games in Sweden: “Can confirm that it will be SHL”

28-year-old Pontus Åberg played junior hockey in Djurgården and made his debut early in both the SHL and the Hockeyallsvenskan.

He had a successful season in Färjestad before he took the step over to North America before the 2014/15 season and there he remained for six straight seasons.

The right-handed forward has played NHL hockey for Nashville, Edmonton, Anaheim, Minnesota and Toronto, but last year he chose to leave the United States and Canada for games in the Russian KHL club Traktor Chelyabinsk.

Åberg was selected in Tre Kronor during last year’s season and this summer a new chance appeared in the NHL.

The Ottawa Senators offered him a contract and Åberg signed – during the autumn, however, he has not had the chance to show himself in the NHL but it has been eleven points (2 + 9) in 17 games.

When Ottawa was hit by covid-19 and forced to call up five forwards, Åberg was not one of these – which has created questions about the future.

Several clubs in Europe – not least in the SHL – have shown interest in Åberg throughout the autumn and now he is about to move home.

According to information to HockeyNews.se, Åberg is close to an agreement with Timrå IK who are fighting for their survival in the SHL – a heavy recruitment for the club to land in battle with other clubs in Sweden.

Åberg’s agent, Filip Andreasson, confirms that the Swede will continue the season in Sweden.

– He is going to the SHL but I can not say more than that right now, says Andreasson.

How did the thoughts go behind that decision?

– He did everything he could over here and gave it another chance. Now we have discussed together and come to what is right for him in this situation, says Andreasson and adds:

– We believe that this is the best step for him to take in his career and for his development.

When will the transition be complete?

– I can not answer that right now but hopefully soon, says Andreasson.
