Tasks: Intel is considering buying Globalfoundries

According to a new report from Wall Street Journal Intel is considering buying US chipmaker Globalfoundries, which would cost the company just over $ 30 billion.

Such an acquisition would raise a lot of eyebrows in the industry, especially as Globalfoundries was originally part of Intel’s arch-rival AMD.

At present, Globalfoundries is the world’s fourth largest chip manufacturer after TSMC, Samsung and UMC, but it is far up to the first two companies that together have 74 percent of the market.

A few months ago, Intel announced that it will build a new factory in Arizona, but it may take many years before it is ready for use. By acquiring Globalfoundries, Intel could increase production much faster than that.

In another statement The Verge Intel says it does not comment on “rumors and speculation”.
