Task Force Ensures Red and White Becomes the Government’s Vaccination Program

So far, there are six institutions or institutions that have participated in developing the vaccine. Among them are Eijkman, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), the University of Indonesia, the Bandung Institute of Technology, Airlangga University, and Gadjah Mada University.

“The red and white vaccine will still be included in the government program,” said Wiku Adisasmito, spokesman for the Covid-19 Task Force in a press conference broadcast on the BNPB Indonesia YouTube channel, Tuesday (18/5).

Wiku at the same time informed that of the six Red and White vaccine developers, the one with the fastest progress currently was made by Universitas Airlangga. Researchers are currently conducting preclinical tests on large animals.

Meanwhile, for Eijkman, the vaccine with recombinant protein subunits is currently in development research and preparation of animal tests for proof of concept. Furthermore, the vaccine from Unair which developed the inactivated virus and adenovirus method entered the pre-clinical, clinical trial preparation and vaccine seed production stages.

LIPI with the recombinant protein method is currently in the process of transfection into mammalian cells and protein characterization. Then, ITB with the recombinant protein sub-unit method and adenovirus vector entered the subunit protein purification stage and adenovirus vector production.

Two others, namely UI with DNA and mRNA development methods have entered development research and animal test preparation, while the last one from UGM with recombinant protein subunits has entered the development stage of synthetic DNA into prokaryotic vectors and mammalian cells.

“After it is successful, clinical trials will continue with the injection of volunteers,” concluded Wiku.

The government had previously divided several brands of vaccines to be used in the national vaccination program targeting 181,554,465 Indonesians over the age of 18, as well as a mutual cooperation vaccine program targeting company employees.

In this case, the national vaccination program is under the auspices of the Ministry of Health, while the mutual cooperation vaccine is under the command of PT Bio Farma and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin).

For the national vaccination program so far the government has determined four brands of vaccines to be used. Namely the Sinovac, AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Novavax vaccines. As for the Mutual Cooperation vaccine, so far the discourse on which vaccine brand will be used by Sinopharm, CanSino, and Sputnik V.
