Task Force Ensures Covid-19 Vaccine is Safe for Pregnant and Breastfeeding Mothers

Harianjogja.com, JAKARTA–The Head of the Expert Team for the COVID-19 Handling Task Force, Prof. Wiku Adisasmito, said that the COVID-19 vaccine can already be given to pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.

He said the screening process or screening before vaccination against pregnant women needed to be done in more detail than other targets. “Vaccination can only be given to pregnant women whose gestational age is 13 weeks and is in the second trimester of pregnancy,” he said.

He added, if you have comorbidities under controlled conditions and there are no acute complications, the vaccine can be given.

In addition, Wiku said, the Ministry of Health also stated that COVID-19 vaccination is safe for breastfeeding mothers.

“Before being vaccinated, breastfeeding mothers are recommended to consult about their health condition with a doctor or health worker first and are in a fit condition to receive the vaccine,” he said.

After the vaccine, he continued, breastfeeding mothers are still safe to breastfeed their children, because breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact can significantly reduce the risk of infant death and have greater benefits than the potential risk of transmitting COVID-19.

Previously, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia issued a circular regarding COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant women and adjustments to screening in the implementation of the vaccination.

“Starting on August 2, 2021, the COVID-19 vaccination can be started for pregnant women with priority in high risk areas,” wrote Plt. Director General of Disease Prevention and Control of the Ministry of Health Maxi Rein Rondonuwu in the circular letter.

In the circular, the vaccines that can be used for pregnant women are the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 mRNA platform vaccines, then the Sinovac inactivated platform vaccine.
