Tashkeel Art and Design Center Opens Makers Space in Alserkal Avenue, Dubai

Tashkeel Art and Design Center has opened a creative facility in the Alserkal Avenue district of Al Quoz in Dubai, in response to the growing demand among seasoned and emerging artists and designers for high-quality equipment that allows the implementation of a range of operations using a variety of materials for experimentation, prototyping and completion of designs and artwork.

The new facility, called “Makers Space”, or “Maker Space”, is located in Warehouse No. 89 in Alserkal Avenue, close to the “Tashkeel Gallery” located in the ancient arts and design district of Dubai. The new creative space allows artists and designers to produce high-quality design work right here in the UAE, using paper, textiles, wood, acrylic and other materials.

The makers area offers a list of commercial services that include laser cutting of wood, cardboard, paper, textiles and acrylic, digital spray and sublimation printing using the latest Epson printers and high-quality papers, in addition to RISO printing, which is one of the most environmentally friendly printing methods today.

Lisa Palichgar, Deputy Director of the Tashkeel Center, confirmed that the specialized design and artistic spaces that enable artists and designers to develop their creative perceptions, develop their artworks, and present them are among the most important requirements for the continuous growth in the expanding creative and cultural fields in the UAE, noting that the opening of the Tashkeel Makers Space Facility comes in response to this growing need. She said: “Embracing ideas and promoting innovation has been a solid part of Tashkeel’s vision and mission over the past fifteen years. The opening of this vital new facility in the Alserkal Avenue community coincides with the ongoing renovation works at our main center in Nad Al Sheba, allowing us to continue to push the wheel of creativity and development in the cultural and artistic scene in the UAE.

Center members can use all the equipment in the makerspace. Joining Tashkeel has become even easier thanks to the new fast-track membership procedures. With daily, weekly and monthly membership levels, Tashkeel members become part of a community of like-minded creators who enjoy exclusive member events and take advantage of facilities such as a shared art studio, screen printing equipment (exposer, vacuum, wash station), embossing press and heat press.

Tashkeel members receive guidance and support from the center team, receive a weekly arts newsletter, and an introductory page is assigned to each of them in the “Artist Search” section of the Tashkeel website. They also have the opportunity to apply for participation in the first individual art residency program at Tashkeel’s headquarters in the historic Al Fahidi neighborhood. Interested creators can fill out a Tashkeel membership form to apply for membership.

The Makers Space also receives the general public interested in building their practical skills, through a seasonal program of workshops and courses. At this facility, the public can book laser printing, digital printing, and RISO printing services.

The Makers Space opens its doors from 10 am to 7 pm daily, except for Fridays and public holidays.
