Tarsorafi Modification Technique, Prevent Blindness in People with Leprosy

Jakarta

One of the complications faced by sufferers leprosy or leprosy is ocular lagophthalmos paralysis or the inability of the eyes to close tightly. This condition is at risk of triggering blindness if left untreated.

Dr dr Yunia Irawati, SpM(K) from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI) researched one method to overcome this, namely the tarsorafi modification technique. Compared to the gold weight implant method which is more often used, this method is more efficient in terms of complications and costs.

“My hope is that the tarsoraphy modification technique will soon become a treatment step that can reach more people with disabilities leprosy from various circles,” said Dr Yunia, who is Head of Trauma Center sub-specialist in the Plastic and Reconstructive Eye Division at JEC Eye Hospitals and Clinics.

In his dissertation entitled ‘Comparison of Effectiveness and Efficiency between Modified Tarsoraphy Technique and Gold Weight Implant Technique as Operative Management of Lagophthalmos Paralysis in Patients with Leprosy‘, Dr. Yunia compared the gold weight implant method with modified tarsorafi which combines permanent lateral tarsora and levator recess techniques, as well as cantopexy/lateral tarsal strip (LTS) and canthoplasty techniques.

He completed the research from October 2018 to May 2020. Yunia involved 19 subjects consisting of 27 eyes. The results showed that the technique produced the same level of effectiveness as the gold weight implant technique.

The time required for the procedure is also as efficient as the gold weight implant technique. However, tarsophical modification carries a risk of complications.
